Japan Box Office: PSYCHO-PASS PROVIDENCE Makes 4th Place Debut

PSYCHO-PASS PROVIDENCE, the latest feature film from Production I.G's PSYCHO-PASS anime franchise, was released in 173 theaters across Japan on May 12 and ranked fourth in its opening weekend with an estimated three-day gross of 150 million yen (1.1 million USD).

As part of the franchise's 10th-anniversary project, the film tells an untold episode that connects the 2019 film Psycho-Pass: Sinners of the System Case. 3: On the Other Side of Love and Hate and the TV anime's third season from 2019. The three-day first weekend gross was 109.5 percent of the two-day first weekend gross of the Psycho-Pass: The Movie, which earned 850 million yen (6.25 million USD) from its total domestic run in 2015. Also, the 2023 film has done much better than the previous three-part Sinners of the System film series in 2019.

The film also received critical acclaim from audience surveys. It ranked No.1 on Filmarks' first-day satisfaction ranking with an average rating of 4.2/5.0 based on 791 reviews.

Coming in second on Filmarks' first-day satisfaction ranking was the live-action feature film adaptation of Auri Hirao's underground idol-themed yuri comedy manga If My Favorite Pop Idol Made It to the Budokan, I Would Die, which gained an average rating of 3.9/5.0 based on 65 reviews. However, it failed to rank in the overall top 10. Following the well-received TV drama series in 2022, the film was released in 88 theaters across Japan on May 12.

In its fifth weekend, the Detective Conan anime franchise's 26th feature film, Detective Conan: Black Iron Submarine, earned 499 million yen (3.67 million USD) on 337,000 admissions, bringing its total to the record-breaking 11.11 billion yen (81.7 million USD) on 7.83 million admissions in 31 days since its release on April 14.

Tokyo Revengers 2 Chi no Valentine-hen -Unmei- ("Bloody Halloween Arc -Fate-") ranked sixth in its fourth weekend, two positions down from the previous weekend. Its cumulative total gross has finally surpassed two billion yen (14.71 million USD). However, it is still less than half of the total gross of the first live-action film in July 2021.

THE FIRST SLAM DUNK stayed in the Japanese box office top 10 for 24 consecutive weekends since its release on December 3, 2022. Its total domestic gross has reached 14.1 billion yen (103.6 million USD).

The film starring fashion model/actress Rinka Kumada and Johnny&Associates' boy idol group HiHi Jets member Mizuki Inoue ranked 10th in its opening weekend and ranked seventh on Filmarks' first-day satisfaction ranking with an average rating of 3.4/5.0 based on 111 reviews.
