On the release day of its latest 16th tankobon volume in Japan, it was officially announced that a live-action film adaptation of Akane Tamura's romance manga A Side Character's Love Story (Mobuko no Koi in Japan) is now in the works for a release in 2024.
The manga was first published as a one-shot story in the November 2016 issue of Monthly Comic Zenon, and serialized in the magazine from the May 2017 issue until the September 2018 issue. It was then transferred to the web manga site Comic Tatan, where it has been serialized since August 2018. Its English edition has been released digitally since February 2020. The synopsis for its first volume reads as:
Growing up, Nobuko Tanaka was always a "side character" standing off in the corner. Now in her 20s, she's fallen in love for the first time. While she isn't any good at being assertive, she will muster her courage bit by bit as she tries her best to close the distance between herself and her crush -- because even side characters fall in love. If you're tired of the same old romantic protagonists, this modest, refreshing love story is for you.
The manga's official Twitter announces the news with a congratulatory illustration:
