Nintendo Switch Outsells the SNES, Lifetime Sales Crack 52 Million Units

Super Mario Odyssey

The Nintendo Switch is doing REALLY well for Nintendo, the latest earnings report that was released on January 30 from the company shows. The hybrid console has overtaken the estimated sales of its older Xbox One sibling and has become the second highest-selling console of this generation with 52 million units sold worldwide (though technically, the Nintendo Switch is in the next generation of consoles) as of December 30.

Splatoon 2

With this milestone, the console becomes the third best-selling home console for Nintendo, behind the Wii and NES, and in front of the SNES, and stays the fifth best-selling portable console, but inching closer to the Nintendo 3DS.

Nintendo says in the report that the 22.5% “significant sales growth” of the Nintendo Switch in the first 9 months of 2019 is thanks to the shipment of “huge hits” like Luigi’s Mansion 3, Link’s Awakening, and Pokémon Sword and Shield, which sold 16.06 million copies in only a month and a half.

The Kyoto-based company also mentions that some of the sales can be attributed to the launch of the Nintendo Switch in China. With the huge population that the country has, it will be interesting to see how well the Japanese company will do in 2020.

Pokémon Sword and Shield

The third quarter Nintendo earnings report for 2019 estimates that as of March 30, 2020, over 54 million consoles will be sold. With games such as Persona 5 Scramble (in Japan), Animal Crossing, and the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon remake still to come before the end of the Japanese financial year, the momentum for the hybrid console will continue to grow.

Now, about that Metroid Prime 4 news Nintendo...
