CPL #7: Kyler Murray is a great prospect if he picks baseball

Source: www.athleticsnation.com - Thursday, January 31, 2019 The two-sport star has a big decision to make. Our 2019 Community Prospect List adds its most complicated case in recent memory. The newest addition is a great baseball prospect, but he’s also a hot football prospect and might leave entirely to play in the NFL. Here’s the current list, including their winning margins (the difference between his % of the vote, and the % of the runner-up): Jesus Luzardo, LHP (+78%) A.J. Puk, LHP (+7%) Sean Murphy, C (+80%) Lazaro Armenteros, OF (+1%) Austin Beck, OF (+59%) Jorge Mateo, SS (+6%) Kyler Murray, OF (+7%) There’s not much else to say about the Kyler Murray situation that hasn’t already been said a thousand times, and there’s no new information to add. The A’s drafted him in the 1st round last summer, but he stuck around school for one more season of college football and won the Heisman . Now his football prospects have gone from questionable to hot, and he might be a 1st-round dra

Italy must not define O’Shea’s rugby career

Source: www.irishexaminer.com - Thursday, January 31, 2019 Ernest Hemingway’s take on sports was pretty simplistic. And brutal. “There are only three sports,” he is reputed to have said, “bullfighting, motor racing and mountaineering. All the rest are merely games.” Italy head coach Conor O'Shea and captain Sergio Paresse with the Six Nations trophy during the 2019 Guinness Six Nations Rugby Championship Launch at the Hurlingham Club in London, England. Photo by Ian Walton/Sportsfile. Such anoutlook was perfectly in keeping with a man whose life was a necklace of one adventure after another. It’s unlikely then he would have much truck with today’s sporting pastimes and their adherence to such crazy whimsies as health and safety but it was also Hemingway who apparently coined the phrase ‘grace under pressure’ in 1926 when asked to define ‘guts’ by Dorothy Parker in an interview for the New Yorker. All of which brings us, in a roundabout sort, to Conor O’Shea. Italian head coach sin

The core problem of World of Warcraft? Its the community.

Source: www.mmo-champion.com - Thursday, January 31, 2019 The title says it all. Lets be honest, what has Ion said lately that really stands out. That all the ideas we hate are based on "feedback." That's when it clicked to me, its all because the wrong people are representing the playerbase. On the official forums people are only there because they are angry about the game and dont want to actually play it. On here its all rabid anti-blizzard posters who are bitter at them, spending all day derailing and destroying anything constructive the few people actually here to talk about the game constructively start. On Reddit you get attacked for saying anything against WoW or the dev team, and I suspect there's actually some paid PR people from blizzard trying to quell the bad talk, as well as some foreign agents from other companies trying to put forward the wrong messages to hurt blizzard. On youtube you have people like Heelvsbabyface spreading the worst of the worst t

Cracks in the Ivory Tower: The Moral Mess of Higher Education

Source: nalert.blogspot.com - Thursday, January 31, 2019 Here's an important book to read in 2019 from Oxford University Press. Here's what's the publisher has to say about this blockbuster: Ideally, universities are centers of learning, in which great researchers dispassionately search for truth, no matter how unpopular those truths must be. The marketplace of ideas assures that truth wins out against bias and prejudice. Yet, many people worry that there's rot in the heart of the higher education business. In Cracks in the Ivory Tower, libertarian scholars Jason Brennan and Philip Magness reveal the problems are even worse than anyone suspects. Marshalling an array of data, they systematically show how contemporary American universities fall short of these ideals and how bad incentives make faculty, administrators, and students act unethically. While universities may at times excel at identifying and calling out injustice outside their gates, Brennan and Magness conte

Senate rebukes Trump's plan to withdraw troops from Syria and Afghanistan

Source: theweek.com - Thursday, January 31, 2019 The Senate voted on Thursday to advance legislation opposing President Trump's withdrawal of U.S. forces from Syria and Afghanistan. The measure, an amendment to a Middle East policy bill expected to pass next week, was drafted by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), and passed in a bipartisan vote of 68-23. In December, Trump said the Islamic State has been defeated, and he would pull 2,000 troops from Syria and 7,000 from Afghanistan. The amendment states that "the precipitous withdrawal of United States forces from either country could put at risk hard-won gains and United States national security." It was backed by almost every Senate Republican, with some liberal senators voting against it, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). Sanders told reporters the United States has "been in Afghanistan for a longer period than any war in American history; Syria, we've bee

Camp Fire: Sheriff Honea Takes FOX40 through Devastated Concow Community

Source: fox40.com - Thursday, January 31, 2019 CONCOW -- Before the Camp Fire burned through the town of Paradise, it had destroyed the community of Camelot in nearby Concow. "It moved very, very quickly into this area and unfortunately every residence within this little subdivision was completely consumed by this fire," Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea. With narrow, winding roads, escaping the fire was virtually impossible. With no way to leave, Honea says residents, with the instruction of one of his deputies, huddled together in a grass field. "Told people there was no way out," Honea said. "They watched as the fire burned around them. They would move to one side or the other, depending on how intense the flames were." Others stayed alive by jumping into a nearby lake. Camelot largely remains a ghost town in the aftermath of the Camp Fire. It's clear the community will never look like it did before the fire. For Honea, that's not pessimism. It&#

For Girl Displaced by Camp Fire, Coming Back to School Feels Both Strange and Familiar

Source: fox40.com - Thursday, January 31, 2019 Thousands of families were left with nothing after the Camp Fire raged through Butte County and almost completely wiped out the town of Paradise. It is the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history. FOX40 is following one family over the next year as they take the long journey toward recovery. For 11-year-old Skielar Ritza, it's time to go back to school. She is heading to class in a new building in a new city. It's her first time back to school since the Camp Fire destroyed her home, her community and her sense of normalcy. "I think it's going to get halfway to normal, but it’ll probably never be normal for us," Skielar said. Skielar and her mom, aunts and grandmother have been couch surfing and staying in hotel rooms since the fire. They’ve been forced to go all over the state, wherever they could find shelter, so going back to her school just wasn’t an option. "Since the fire happened we h

Knicks Fan Wishes Horrible Injury On Kristaps Porzingis After He Gets Traded (VIDEO)

Source: www.totalprosports.com - Thursday, January 31, 2019 Image via Getty On Thursday, the New York Knicks shocked the basketball world when they traded all-star forward Kristaps Porzingis to the Dallas Mavericks after a meeting with Knicks management left franchise officials with the impression that he wanted to be traded, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. “We started to get a feel, we could see that he wasn’t completely buying into what we were trying to do,” Knicks general manager Scott Perry said during a post-trade conference call. “And again, (during Thursday’s meeting) we wanted a confirmation from him whether he was completely in or out. He made it clear to us when he came in to meet with us that he no longer wanted to be part of our group.” “With the uncertainty of (his) status and coming off the injury as well, it made Feb. 7 (the trade deadline) a very important date for us.” Perry added. “We felt that in the best interests of the organization, and the Knicks fan b

House to hold hearings on legislation requiring presidential candidates to release their tax returns

Source: www.dailykos.com - Thursday, January 31, 2019 After two years of delays by House and Senate Republicans, House Democrats are finally, finally taking action to address Donald Trump's refusal to make public his tax returns. Trump mockingly dismissed the long-established norm meant to demonstrate that a would-be president is not in the pocket of any untoward interests, coming up with a series of supposed excuses why he could not. As with much else in the Trump era, the realization that a president demonstrating he is not crooked is merely a norm, not a requirement, has left many Americans nonplussed. Now that House committees are under the leadership of Democrats, House Republicans can obstruct no longer. Oversight Subcommittee Chairman Rep. John Lewis announced today the first hearing on new Democratic legislative proposals to require the public release of such records by presidential and vice presidential candidates in future elections. That hearing will take place on Feb.

NFL security chief: No threats to Super Bowl have surfaced

Source: cbs4indy.com - Thursday, January 31, 2019 ATLANTA, Georgia — The National Football League is not aware of any security threats against the Super Bowl, now just days away, the league’s top security officer said. “We have no credible or specific threats that have been brought to our attention,” NFL Chief Security Officer Cathy Lanier said. She spoke at a news conference in host city Atlanta alongside the nation’s Homeland Security secretary as well as state and local law officers. On the ground, trained police canines sniffed visitors to some hotels and other buildings. The New England Patriots face the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl on Sunday. Despite the recently ended partial government shutdown, Homeland Security employees are committed to keeping the Super Bowl secure, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen said. “Protecting an e
