Duke QB Daniel Jones declaring for 2019 NFL Draft

Source: www.ninersnation.com - Monday, December 31, 2018 There’s one more big name we’re waiting for in the next couple weeks. The 2019 NFL Draft has another quarterback in the mix for the first round. Duke quarterback Daniel Jones informed his head coach that he will enter the draft this coming April, according to ACC sportswriter Stephen Wiseman . This news comes a week after Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert announced plans to return to school for one more year. Herbert was viewed as arguably the top quarterback prospect in this year’s draft, but could now be in line to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Jones is not a surprising development, but now the big wait is for Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins. There are some who think Haskins would be the top quarterback on the board, and Jones would be competing with Will Grier (West Virginia) and Drew Lock (Missouri) to be next off the board. The cupboard is a little thin, but that won’t stop teams from reaching in ho

Rain tapers before we ring in the New Year, temperatures rise, and winds kick up!

Source: fox43.com - Monday, December 31, 2018 SOGGY NEW YEAR’S EVE: Expect widespread rain through the evening. Most places pick up amounts ranging from .50” to 1.00” of rain. Temperatures slowly rise into the middle 40s. Showers become scattered towards the midnight hour. It’s still a good idea to have the umbrella with you if heading out to celebrate. Fog could be an issue before the winds increase. Once the winds kick up, the fog will dissipate. It will feel milder in the upper 40s to near 50 degrees. By morning, we are dry, with lows in the middle 40s. The winds pick up and gust to near 30MPH. New Year’s Day brings some sunshine but still plenty of cloud cover hangs around. Winds stay breezy all day. Readings sneak into the lower 50s, early in the day, then fall back to the 40s. REST OF THE WEEK: Temperatures are more seasonable Wednesday, with most areas topping out in the upper 30s to near 40 degrees. High pressure keeps us dry with more sunshine. It’s another partly cloudy day

Treading Moral Ambiguity With Golden Kamuy

What makes Golden Kamuy so enthralling? One could say it’s the setting and history, taking place after the Russo-Japanese war. Another could say that it’s the mind game of finding gold, with characters left and right having different motivations to retrieve it. Or one could say it’s the brutality, as the series never shies from violent battles, harsh nature, and high stakes. I would argue that in many ways, these are all traits that make the show good, but what makes Golden Kamuy great isn’t just its plot, but rather, its fascinating insight on moral ambiguity and what factors drive a human being to act desperately and cunningly. One thing that makes Golden Kamuy stand out from other shows this season is how it construes the idea of “good vs evil.” Many shows tend to have a straightforward moral alignment: we have the heroes, who persevere and stand for good, selfless motives, and then we have the villains, who have insidious motives and are selfish. This isn’t an inherently b

The American Director Who Wishes He Directed Anime

It’s no surprise that anime influences Western artists on a very deep level. Sometimes directors simply borrow a basic idea or a tone from their favorite anime offerings. Other times, they will lift entire sequences, shot for shot, and drop them in the middle of their own films or TV shows. Some creators try to keep their obvious infatuation with anime tightly under wraps. While some creators, like Stranger Things showrunners the Duffer Brothers, have been very open about the anime influence. Darren Aronofsky has also been very forthcoming with his love of anime, discussing how he has paid homage to some of his favorite properties through his own work and expressing his wish to someday create anime of his own. Perhaps Aronofsky’s most famous homage to anime is his live-action reaction of Satoshi Kon’s bath scene in 1997’s Perfect Blue . In Kon’s film a young pop idol, Mima, has found herself suddenly out of style. The fans have begun to move on. To save her career, she transit

House Democrats Have Plan to Reopen Government

Source: www.truthdig.com - Monday, December 31, 2018 WASHINGTON — House Democrats are introducing a package of bills Monday that would re-open the federal government without approving money for President Donald Trump’s border wall. The House is preparing to vote as soon as the new Congress convenes Thursday, as one of the first acts after Democrats take control, according to an aide who was not authorized to discuss the plan and spoke on condition of anonymity. The package to end the shutdown will include one bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security at current levels, with $1.3 billion for border security, through Feb. 8. It will also include six other bipartisan bills — some that have already passed the Senate — to fund the departments of Agriculture, Interior, Housing and Urban Development and others closed by the partial shutdown. They would provide money through the remainder of the fiscal year, to Sept. 30. Democrats under Nancy Pelosi are all but certain to swiftly appro

San Jose Cracking Down On Illegal Fireworks During New Year’s 2019 Celebrations

Which Miami Hurricanes offensive coaches should Manny Diaz keep?

Source: www.stateoftheu.com - Monday, December 31, 2018 It’s a question worth asking (and answering) So, we all know that Mark Richt has retired and Manny Diaz has been hired as the Miami Hurricanes Head Coach . The main issue at present is what Diaz plans to have the Canes do offensively. Diaz mentioned during a radio interview that he wants to do things that make opposing defenses uncomfortable. The translation I have for that: tempo, space, spread, and a different, non-conservative mentality. Regardless of the final iteration of the offensive plan, Diaz will need to hire coaches to make his vision become a reality. Which likely means there will be some new coaches, and some current coaches will be let go. We’ll talk about potential additions/upgrades later, but for now: which Offensive Coaches should stay and which should be thanked for their service and sent on their way elsewhere? Let’s look. But for a long time I couldn't figure out why.  Now, I finally get it: They're downright innocuous.   Here then, in no particular order are the Ten Big Reason why the New Year's "holiday" is dumb, dumb, dumb: 1) There is absolutely no significant historical or religious meaning to the day. 2) How many bowl games can you watch, anyway? 3) The day celebrates not the beginning of anything but rather the end -- the end of the joyous holiday season.  4) The Tournament of Roses Parade, the Mummers Parade and other New Year's spectacles are all pretty much the same year-after-year. 5) You know it's true: Nobody keeps New Year's resolutions. 6) Celebrating the passing of time is like celebrating the inexorable march to your own death. 7) After Christmas, no other holiday on the immediate horizon can compete. 8) By January 1

Marvin Lewis Fired By Bengals After 16 Seasons As Head Coach

Source: www.hotnewhiphop.com - Monday, December 31, 2018 Despite still having one year left on his contract, Marvin Lewis was fired from his head coaching job with the Cincinnati Bengals, according to  ESPN. Lewis coached the team for 16 seasons and holds the franchise record for most wins as a head coach with 131. His total record with the team was 131-122-3, however, he was unable to record a single playoff win, going 0-7. Lewis also struggled against the team's divisional rival, the Pittsburgh Steelers, posting an 8-26 record. Rumors of Lewis being fired by the team have been looming for years. The team made the playoffs five seasons in a row between 2011 and 2015, but the team's struggles in the postseason made fans frustrated with Lewis' tenure. Despite being given a vote of confidence during last year's offseason by the team's owner, Lewis led the Bengals to a 6-10 record making them the worst team in the AFC North. From paychecks to pups: Get ready for new laws in 2019

Source: kdvr.com - Monday, December 31, 2018 WASHINGTON -- When the New Year's confetti comes down at midnight, so will a wave of new laws across the country. At least 19 states will increase their minimum wages on or around New Year's Day, according to the National Employment Law Project . In Colorado, the wage will go up to $11.10 an hour, up from $10.20 an hour and on the way to $12 an hour by 2020. The minimum wage for tipped workers will be $8.08 an hour, up from $7.18 an hour. The group's executive director, Christine Owens, said the increases come after years of frustration by hard-working, lower-income Americans. "Working people are struggling to pay their bills, but they see that it's the corporations and the wealthy CEOs who are getting the tax breaks. It's just not right," Owens said. "The American people believe in the value of work -- and that workers deserve to be valued. That's why there's such strong support for raising the mi

Nick Foles Injury Cost Him $1 Million

Source: www.hotnewhiphop.com - Monday, December 31, 2018 The Philadelphia Eagles just barely squeaked into the playoffs this weekend after defeating the Washington Redskins 24-0 on Sunday. Quarterback Nick Foles threw two touchdowns in the game and threw 25 straight completions. Not to mention he led the team to five straight wins which is what propelled them into the playoffs. Despite that, an injury in Sunday's game prevented him from earning a $1 million bonus. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter , Foles had to lead the team to the postseason and play in 33% of the team's plays on Sunday in order to earn an extra $1 million. During the game, Foles bruised his ribs which forced him out of the match early. When all was said and done, Foles has played 32% of the team's snaps, meaning he was only one percent away from his target. Luckily for Foles and the Eagles, the Super Bowl-winning quarterback will be able to play next weekend in the team's wild-card matchup again

Don’t expect Brexit to give us a British Alexander Hamilton | Rafael Behr

And when I wasn’t listening to the Hamilton soundtrack I wrote about Brexit. I’m late to the Hamilton party, I know. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical about the first US Treasury secretary opened on Broadway in 2015. I only got tickets to see it in London a few weeks ago, but by then I was word-perfect on the score. For the uninitiated, Hamilton tells the story of an orphan immigrant’s climb up the social and political ladders of newly independent America, culminating in a death that … well, let’s just say it puts the modern Twitter spat into perspective. Plus singing, dancing, rapping. Related: Brexit will bring a new ‘blitz spirit’? This is nostalgia at its most toxic | Matthew d’Ancona Related: Brexiteers want Britain to

Me and my brother grew up wrestling. We did shows in the backyard when we were 13. We sold tapes when we were in high school. I can’t remember when I didn’t want to do this. I got in a wrestling ring on my 14th birthday, and I didn’t want to be anywhere else.” His match with Arquette: “It did get people talking, and that le

Foles also left the Eagles’ Week 16 game after taking a big hit from Jadeveon Clowney , but h

CNN’s Charlie Dent: Elizabeth Warren Announcing 2020 Bid a ‘Total Gift for President Trump’

Source: www.mediaite.com - Monday, December 31, 2018 Senator Elizabeth Warren made what many thought to be a curious decision of announcing her presidential plans for 2020 on December 31st, a day in which many people are taking a break from tracking news and are generally offline. Warren’s presidential bid was brought up on a CNN panel discussion Monday morning and former Republican Representative and CNN contributor Charlie Dent spared little criticism towards Warren’s bid. “I can’t tell you if it’s a smart move or not but this is a total gift to President Trump,” Dent proclaimed, adding “this is the candidate he clearly wants.” Dent echoes a well-regarded notion that Warren is a perfect foil for Trump and his anti-identity-politics-cum-identity-politics base. “Democrats want a new generation of leadership, he said. ” They’re looking at someone like Kamala Harris, Cory Booker or Beto O’rourke. I’ve been critical of my party for this social intolerance but Elizabeth Warren brings to t

Russia detains US citizen on suspicion of spying

Source: wreg.com - Monday, December 31, 2018 WASHINGTON — Russia has detained a US citizen on suspicion of spying, according to the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB). American Paul Whelan was arrested December 28 in Moscow “while carrying out an act of espionage,” the FSB said in a statement. “The investigation department of the Federal Security Service of Russia initiated a criminal case against a US citizen under article 276 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The investigation is underway,” the statement continued. Article 276 is espionage. If found guilty, Whelan faces 10 to 20 years imprisonment, Russia’s state-run news agency TASS reported. The FSB, the successor agency to the Soviet-era KGB, is Russia’s domestic intelligence agency. The US government has sanctioned the FSB over cyber activities, and earlier this year, the Treasury Department imposed sanctions on a firm controlled by the FSB for conducting cyberattacks against the United States. The FSB, however

NFL coaching changes: Every head coach fired after 2018 season

Source: chicago.suntimes.com - Monday, December 31, 2018 With the conclusion of the 2018 regular season Sunday, NFL teams began the difficult process of evaluating their successes and failures from the past 17 weeks. In many cases, it appears those franchises have decided that big changes are needed because the league’s coaching carousel is operating at maximum activity. Many different teams across the league have announced or are expected to announce the firing of their respective head coaches Monday. The ignominious day in coaching circles, also known colloquially as Black Monday, appears to be particularly cruel this year as teams make aggressive decisions to alter their paths. Several teams made their decisions long before the season even ended. The Browns gave up on Hue Jackson midway through a disappointing season and seemed to turn a corner under interim coach Gregg Williams, who did a better job getting production out of rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield. The Packers also fire

What do you think of Elizabeth Warren announcing her candidacy?

Source: freethoughtblogs.com - Monday, December 31, 2018 I think it’s good. I don’t know if I want her as president yet, but declaring an intent to run means we can discuss what a Democratic presidency should mean, and that other candidates will be jockeying for policy positions relative to hers, and maybe a compelling vision will gel by the time of the primaries. A battle over what our government should do should sharpen the field…as long as it doesn’t descend into a contest over who hates Trump more. Because I think I’d be a contender in that contest, and I’d be a terrible president. All Related Source: Breaking News

Forget Silva: £150k-a-week star the real inspiration behind Man City's win on Sunday - opinion

Source: http://bit.ly/1foOarI - Monday, December 31, 2018 Manchester City supporters have been in high spirits in recent times after seeing their team crucially get back to winning ways in the Premier League on Sunday. Pep Guardiola’s men went into their clash with Southampton off the back of surprise defeats at the hands of Leicester City and Crystal Palace in their preceding two matches, thus handing the initiative to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in the title race. Yet the Citizens bridged the gap to seven points on Sunday as goals from David Silva and Sergio Aguero alongside a James Ward-Prowse own goal inspired the visitors to a 3-1 success at St Mary’s, in turn clinching their 15th Premier League victory of the campaign. As such, there have been many thrilled City fans up and down the country in recent times, with Spain international Silva likely coming in for much praise for supporters for returning to the team with quite the effect on Sunday, netting once and overall playing a key

Work still to do on Brexit deal after PM’s Christmas talks, says Downing Street

Source: www.aol.com - Monday, December 31, 2018 Theresa May has spoken with European leaders over Christmas but “there is still more work to do” just nine days before her key Brexit deal returns to the Commons for a key vote that will shape the UK’s future. MPs are due to debate the Withdrawal Agreement hammered out with Brussels on January 9 before a meaningful vote the following week. Having been forced to pull the vote in December in the face of almost certain failure, Mrs May needs something fresh to offer critics in the Tory ranks if it is to pass this time. A Downing Street spokeswoman said on Monday that while discussions between the UK and EU had continued she was still working on getting the “legal and political assurances” required. She said the PM had “been in contact with European leaders and that will continue in the lead up to the vote”. The spokeswoman added: “Her focus is certainly on getting the assurances that MPs want ahead of that vote taking place. “There is stil
