Director Makoto Shinkai Shares New and Old Production Secrets on Weathering with You

Weathering With You

Weathering with You, the latest anime film from director Makoto Shinkai and his team at CoMix Wave Films, finally released on Blu-ray and DVD in Japan yesterday, with its own special 4K UHD limited edition (that looks beautiful). To celebrate the release, director Shinkai went to Twitter to share some secrets on the production of the film, including some very early pre-production, and some very late post-production – so late it was after the film finished in cinemas!

The above tweet shows the story composition, with all the film laid out to easy work on. If you haven't seen the film, there are some slight spoilers, but Shinkai noted that he made this before actually writing the script, so there are some slight differences between the above composition and the finished film.

The other tweet is just as interesting. Shinkai wrote that when he saw in the finished film that he forgot to add the cloud layer to a certain shot of the film "he went pale as the blood drained" from his face. Being able to laugh about it now, he added the cloud layer back into the shot (the below image) for the home release and says that the theatrical version would be a "rare version" of the film now.

Shinkai also noted that there are more corrections in the film, but they may be hard to catch.

While Japan just got the home release of Weathering with You, people in the United States will have to wait a little longer, with GKIDS releasing the film on digital platforms on August 4 before a home release on Blu-ray and DVD on September 15.
