The recipients of the 40th annual Fujimoto Award's were revealed yeserday, with the producers of Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train taking home the top-honors from the past year. The Fujomoto Award are given out by the Eiga Engeki Bunka Kyokai (Film Theater Culture Association) and recongises Japanese film producers that have made achivements over the past year and are named in honor of legendary film producer Sanezumi Fujimoto, who worked along Akira Kurosawa (among others) and was the head of Toho Studio's production division.
For Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, Aniplex president and producer Atsuhiro Iwakami, ufotable founder and president Hikaru Kondo, and Shueisha anime producer and planner Makoto Ooyoshi were recongised by the association.
The association commented on the award, saying:
"The animated film, which began as a weekly Shonen Jump series by Koyoharu Gotouge and reached the peak of its popularity through anime broadcasts, became a social phenomenon with its overwhelming visuals and music. It's engaging story that transcended generations, grabbing the imagination of those young and old, combined with the powerful theme song by LiSA, created a social phenomenon that resonated with nearly 30 million viewers. The film also saw huge success internationally, including breaking records in the United States. Mugen Train has greatly revitalized the struggling film industry, which was impacted by COVID-19."
Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train opened in Japanese cinemas on October 16 and had the best opening weekend in Japanese cinema history, becoming the highest-grossing film in Japanese theaters ever, the highest-grossing anime and Japanese film worldwide, and the second-highest-grossing film of 2020. In North America, Mugen Train made its stop in theaters on April 23 both dubbed and subbed formats, with a digital release of the film on June 22, becoming the first anime film to top the US box office since Pokémon: The First Movie in 1999.
The Ufotable-produced anime film continues to adapt the manga series by Koyoharu Gotouge, which saw a TV anime series adaptation in 2019. The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba TV anime series streamed on Crunchyroll as it aired. The second season of the TV anime series, subtitled "Entertainment District arc", will premiere sometime in 2021 on Japanese TV.
