Comiket 98 Has Been Canceled to Limit the Spread of Coronavirus

Comiket

The largest fan gathering in the world, Comic Market, commonly known as Comiket, announced on its website that Comiket 98, which was scheduled for Golden Week in Japan on May 2 to 5, has been canceled to "prevent the spread of the new type of coronavirus infection (COVID-19)." The summer event, which is usually held in August, was moved this year to accommodate the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which were postponed earlier this week.

In a post on the official website, Comiket noted that the participation guide for the upcoming event has already been printed and will still go on sale on April 11 in stores in Japan, though the wristbands will not be valid for future events. They asked people to "please buy the guide to show support." The digital guide and DVD-ROM versions of the guides will be discontinued.

This is the first time Comiket has ever been canceled.

Comiket usually attracts more than 500,000 people over the three-day event, which was extended to four-days at Comiket 97 to ease the number of people going to the event, which also had the corporate section of the event moved to Aomi Exhibition Hal lin Odaiba to let Tokyo Big Sight get ready for the Olympics. We covered both Comiket events last year, Comiket 96 and Comiket 97.

As for the future of the next Summer Comiket in 2021, Comiket officials don't know as of yet due to the postponement of the Olympics taking over Tokyo Big Sight and Makuhari Messe, the other big convention center in Tokyo. They note that Winter Comiket is still set to occur, but more information will be released at a later time.
