Animal Crossing New Horizons Is the Best Selling Game in Japan in 2020 ... So Far

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

It was already well known that Animal Crossing: New Horizons was a smashing success with over 13.4 million copies sold worldwide in just the first 6 weeks of release, and the competition continues on in the video game landscape – at least in Japan – where every other game pales against the might of Nook.

Leading Japanese video game publication Famitsu released its video game sale figures for the first half of 2020 trailer this month, with the simulation game far in front of the rest of the pack. These figures include both packaged versions and download card versions, but not eShop downloads – of which Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa stated that Animal Crossing saw a "high percentage of digital sales."

With the Japanese video game market up by 24.8% from 2019 in the same time frame, sales of Ring Fit Adventure were (and continue to be) limited due to how in demand the game is worldwide and issues with the manufacturing process for the peripheral for the game – which is packaged with the game and unavailable to be purchased separately.

Famitsu also reports that the Nintendo Switch, also despite its continuing stock shortages in Japan, was the top-selling console with 2.666 million units sold, leading the pack against the PlayStation 4 which had 435,812 unit sold, the Xbox One with 2,685 units, and the Nintendo 3DS line with 33,340 units.
