Japan Box Office: Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway Surpasses Char's Counterattack

While dropping one spot again from last week to fifth place, the first part of the trilogy anime film project Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway had earned 1.35 billion yen (12.21 million USD) in three weeks since its release on June 11, 2021, and already surpassed the domestic gross of Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack, which was released in 1988 and earned 1.13 billion yen (10 million USD). Hathaway is a sequel to Char's Counterattack featuring Hathaway Noah, the son of Bright Noah.

The first part of Hathaway now becomes the fourth top-grossing film in the Gundam franchise. And it is expected to be the third top-grossing one soon by surpassing the box office gross of Mobile Suit Gundam: Soldiers of Sorrow, which was released in July 1981 and earned 1.38 billion yen (12.48 million yen) from its domestic run. The top-grossing film in the Gundam franchise is Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters in Space, the third part of the compilation film series based on the first Mobile Suit Gundam TV series, which earned 2.3 billion yen (20 million USD).

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time ranked fourth in its 16th weekend, still staying in the top 10. The fourth and final installment in the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy film series has earned 9.56 billion yen (86.49 million USD) to become the 13th top-grossing Japanese film of all-time, surpassing Detective Conan The Fist of Blue Sapphire (2019 / 9.37 billion yen)

In its 11th weekend, the Detective Conan anime franchise's 24th feature film Meitantei Conan: Hiiro no Dangan / Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet ranked eighth, one spot down from the previous week. The film has earned 7.17 billion yen (64.87 million USD) to rank 33rd in the Japanese film's box office ranking of all-time.
