Japan Box Office: Top Gun Maverick Returns to No.1, Defeating Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO

Tom Cruise's Top Gun Maverick and Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO have been fighting a fierce battle at Japanese box office. After the latter made its No.1 debut last weekend, the former returned to the top position in its fourth weekend bringing its total to 5.6 billion yen (44 million USD).

While dropping second in its second weekend, the 21st feature film in Toei Animation's long-running Dragon Ball anime franchise earned 1.27 billion yen (10 million USD) on 947,000 admissions in nine days since its release on June 11. The previous 20th film Dragon Ball Super: BROLY, released in Japan in December 2018, made 2,037,801,100 yen (16 million USD) in its first 11 days. Based on the results of its first two weeks, the film is likely to finish its domestic run around 2.8 billion yen (22 million USD), about 70 percent of the total domestic gross of BROLY.

Surprisingly, The Quintessential Quintuplets the Movie, a sequel to the two-season TV anime adaptation of Negi Haruba's romantic comedy manga, climbed up one position to third in its fifth weekend. As reported, its domestic ticket sales had already surpassed a milestone of one million in 26 days since its release. Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween ranked seventh in its tenth weekend. Its total domestic gross has reached 8.9 billion yen (70 million USD) to become the 14th top-grossing Japanese film of all-time.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island, the Yoshikazu Yasuhiko-directed latest anime feature film in the Gundam franchise, ranked eighth in its third weekend with a total gross of 850 million yen (6.7 million USD). Teasing Master Takagi-san Movie, the feature film sequel to the TV anime series based on Soichiro Yamamoto's romantic comedy manga, was down three positions to ninth in its second weekend.

While not appearing in the overall box office top 10, the live-action film adaptation of Kaori Tsurutani's BL Metamorphosis manga ranked No.1 in Filmarks' first day satisfaction ranking with an average rating of 4.07/5.0 based on 801 reviews. Kaitou Queen wa Circus ga Osuki (The Phantom Thief Queen Loves the Circus), the anime film adaptation of the first volume of Kaoru Hayamine's Kaito Queen (Mirage Queen) novel series, also failed to rank in the overall top 10, but ranked third in Filmarks' ranking with an average rating of 3.96/5.0 based on 116 reviews.
