The Japan Retro Game Association ("JARGA" for short) is making the lives of some 100 Japanese families a little bit brighter, because the organization is giving away 100 refurbished Nintendo Super Famicom video game consoles (along with copies of Donkey Kong Country and Final Fantasy VI) to households with teenage children in an effort to bolster the spirits of people affected by the shelter-at-home conditions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Members of the Japan Retro Game Association clean and sterlize Super Famicom controllers for a charitable giveaway.

Families in Japan with children ages 16 and younger can apply via e-mail as indicated at the official JARGA home page, with the caveat that JARGA asks that people who already own a Super Famicom to please not apply. The deadline for the give-away is April 26, 2020, and one hundred lucky winners will be selected on April 27, 2020. Winners agree to pay C.O.D. shipping costs ranging from 1100 yen ($10.23 US) to 1750 yen ($16.28 US) depending on the location within Japan to which the consoles are shipped.

Each previously-owned console has been carefully cleaned and sterilized, and the packages include 1 controller, a power cable, an RCA adapter cord, and 1 Super Famicom cartridge copy of Donkey Kong Country and Final Fantasy VI. JARGA guarantees that each system will work for at least 1 week after arrival, and winners can correspond with JARGA directly if they have a problem with the console within that time-frame.
