Along with the forthcoming Netflix series Akuma-kun in 2023, Kitaro Tanjou - GeGeGe no Nazo will be produced as the 100th anniversary project of the GeGeGe no Kitaro nanga author Shigeru Mizuki. Go Koga (Dokidoki Precure!) serves as director on a screenplay by Hiroyuki Yoshino (My-HiME). Toei Animation works on anime production.

Miyuki Sawashiro, who played the protagonist Kitaro in the latest sixth GeGeGe no Kitaro TV anime series in 2018-2020, reprises her role, alongside Masako Nozawa as Kitaro's father. As its title suggests, based on the sixth series, the film explores the "mystery of Kitaro's birth" that everyone seems to know but does not.
