Mamoru Oshii's New Live-action Film Blood Friends Gets One Night Only Screening on February 5

Internationally acclaimed anime director Mamoru Oshii's (Ghost in The Shell, Mobile Police Patlabor) new live-action film Chii Tomodachi / Blood Friends will get its one night only screening at the Theatre Shinjuku theater in Tokyo on February 5, 2022.

The 80-minute film was originally scheduled to be released in Japan in April 2020. However, the first emergency declaration due to the COVID-19 pandemic led to the postponement of the film. As the second entry from the newly-launched experimental film label "Cinema Lab" following Katsuyiki Motohiro's Beautiful Dreamer in November 2020, it was rescheduled for a release in March 2021. Even after that, the release of the film has been postponed three times due to repeated emergency declarations, and at this point there is no prospect of its nationwide theatrical release.

For fans who want to see Oshi's new film in a theater, a one night only screening event has been decided to be held. "Unlike my usual films, this was a film that I shot with a directness that I had never thrown before, and at the same time, it was a film that I struggled with more than ever before," Oshii says, "After two months of working with the young actors in the workshop, I realized that filmmaking is an adventure full of surprises. It has been a long time since we shot the film, but a film is not complete until it is released to the public, and now that we are able to deliver it to you, then the film is finally finished. I would like to express my gratitude to Theatre Shinjuku for giving us this opportunity."

Oshii himself will appear on the stage, and Hiroyuki Kitakubo-directed 2000 film BLOOD THE LAST VAMPIRE, which Oshii was involved in planning, will be also screened.
