The swansong of the Evangelion franchise, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, has surpassed the lifetime box office gross of Evangelion 3.0 to become the highest-grossing film domestically in the series in less than a month in theaters.
Since Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 was released in Japan on March 8, the anime film has grossed a total of 6,078,211,750 yen (US$55,382,538) on the back of 3,961,480 tickets sold. This makes the film the highest-grossing film in the Evangelion franchise in Japanese yen, beating Evangelion 3.0's 5.3 billion yen lifetime gross (this total includes re-releases). Due to currency fluctuations, Evangelion 3.0's worldwide gross totals US$67,282,623, with US$66,015,081 of that being made in Japan back in 2012 (and 2020).
Evangelion: 3.0+1.0's box office gross was helped by its release on premium formats in Japan. While Evangelion 3.0 released on standard screens in 2012, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 released on standard screens, IMAX, and 4DX, giving it an edge. Though beating its previous film in just under a month is no small feat, and it'll likely outgross 3.0's worldwide gross in Japan alone.
Evangelion 3.0+1.0 finally opened in Japan after being delayed twice due to the coronavirus pandemic on March 8, breaking franchise records on the first day. It is the longest film in the franchise (not including compilations or special screenings). There is no word yet on an international release of the film.
