Pokémon Sword and Shield Sales Gigatamax, 16 Million Copies Sold Before End of 2019

Pokémon Sword and Shield

It was announced on January 30 in a report from Nintendo that over 16.06 million trainers have traveled to the Galar region in the latest Pokémon game for the Nintendo Switch. The report, which tallies up to December 30, 2019, announced that Pokémon Sword and Shield, which released on November 15, in only a month and a half has become the fifth highest-selling Nintendo Switch game, above Pokémon Lets Go! Pikachu and Eevee, which released a year prior.

This makes Pokémon Sword and Shield the best launch for a Pokémon game since the series moved to a worldwide simultaneous release on the Nintendo 3DS starting with Pokémon X/Y, which sold 11.61 million copies in the same time period. The, now second, highest-selling game in the same launch period is Pokémon Sun and Moon with 14.69 million units.

Pokémon Sword and Shield has even eclipsed the total sales of both generation 5 Pokémon games, Black and White, and Black 2 and White 2. The generation 5 games sold 15.64 million and 8.52 million on the Nintendo DS respectively. Sword and Shield has also already out-sold all the remake and ‘third’ games in the series.

With the momentum Pokémon Sword and Shield, and upcoming DLC for the game – which reintroduces 200+ more Pokémon –, has brought, the games are poised to sell more than every mainline Pokémon game since Pokémon Gold and Silver. Heck, it might already have in January, but to know that, we’ll have to wait for Nintendo’s full-year earnings report in April.
