Onimusha Games Get Anime With Takashi Miike as Chief Director

Onimusha anime

A bunch of news came out of this weekend's Netflix TUDUM event, including some anime reveals. Among them was the announcement of an anime based on Capcom's Onimusha series of horror action games, with film director Takashi Miike (Dead or Alive, Ichi the Killer) serving as chief director at anime production house Sublimation.

Shinya Suga (Dragon's Dogma) is lined up as director for the Onimusha anime. Like the games, the anime's lead is modeled after a real life actor, and this time it's none other than screen legend Toshiro Mifune—known for working with director Akira Kurosawa on classic films like Seven Samurai, High and Low and many more—as the character model for Miyamoto Musashi in a demon-infused, war-torn early Edo period setting.

Capcom released the first in the Onimusha series on PlayStation 2 back in 2001, with Takeshi Kaneshiro serving as the basis for main character Samanosuke. Subsequent entries have featured characters modeled after Yusaku Matsuda and Jean Reno.

The Onimusha anime will stream on Netflix. Here are a few more stills:

Here's how Capcom describes the remaster:

Onimusha: Warlords was first released on PlayStation®2 in 2001. Its exhilarating sword-fighting action and intense battles against demons captivated players worldwide. That same masterpiece is making a comeback on current-gen consoles.

Japanese actor Takeshi Kaneshiro, who played the voice of main character Samanosuke in the original game, also joined the project as a guest creator. The Japanese voices have been newly recorded, and the brand new soundtrack promises to be even more spectacular than the original.
