How Boruto Uses Time Travel to Teach Us About Parenting

The latest arc of BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS has arrived! To celebrate 20 years since the manga’s publication, the story has brought Boruto back in time and sent him on a mission to protect our favorite ninja from the Hidden Leaf Village: a younger version of Naruto!

Now, there are a lot of movies and TV shows recently that deal with time travel and the rules surrounding it (looking at you Endgame), particularly how the people from the future can interact with the people in the past. This can sometimes mean making sure that people from two separate timelines never meet to avoid a paradox, but BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS takes a different approach. This arc in particular seems to explicitly want Boruto and Naruto to interact, letting Boruto see things from his dad’s perspective when they were about the same age.

Whether it’s Boruto seeing his parents before they were a couple or meeting the teachers who would lay the foundation of Naruto’s strength, BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS is giving fans some nice callbacks while also giving those relationships a different perspective. It is nice to see the old cast again and remember where they all came from.

One particularly resonant scene comes when Boruto stays over at Naruto’s house. Naruto asks what Boruto’s dad is like and, having to be discreet, Boruto says while his dad is strong and depended upon, is usually so exhausted that he is too tired to take care of his family. A younger Naruto, sensing the kindness in his words, can still tell despite his frustrations, Boruto cares about his dad. Boruto agrees, “Yeah, I don’t hate him.”

Another reflective scene comes when Boruto confronts Sasuke about his past, specifically when he abandoned the Hidden Leaf Village. Boruto directly asks Sasuke what he was doing at that time and what made him leave. Sasuke though dodges the question, saying they have other things to worry about. How, and even if, Sasuke tries to justify his actions to Boruto so many years later will certainly be interesting to see.

While Boruto has always had issues with his dad, the show seems to want Boruto to learn a little bit more of Naruto’s perspective, even if that does involve a little bit of time travel. This also gives ample chance to let fans look back at how far they’ve come in 20 years. Here’s to you, Naruto!
