Sega's Genesis Mini Arrives with 40 Games on September 19

We finally have some info about Sega's official attempt at making a mini console thanks to an announcement made at Sega Fes 2019. The Sega Mega Drive/Genesis Mini launches worldwide on September 19, and it will pack 40 classic games for ¥6,980 or ¥8,980 depending on the variation you choose. Western pricing has been set at $79.99 US / £69.99 / €79.99 / AUD$139.95.

The difference between the types basically comes down to how many controllers you want. While Japan is getting a version with one controller and a version with two, pricing and unit types differ for other regions. The games themselves are also slightly different, but for now we know a handful of the titles that will be coming to Japan and the west.

Titles revealed thus far for Japan include Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Puyo Puyo 2, Shining Force, Castlevania Bloodlines, Powerball, Gunstar Heroes, Comix Zone, Rent-a-Hero, Space Harrier II, and Madou Monogatari Ichi.

Games announced for the west so far are Sonic the Hedgehog, Ecco the Dolphin, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Space Harrier II, Shining Force, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, ToeJam & Earl, Comix Zone, Altered Beast, and Gunstar Heroes. This version is based on the Model 1 Genesis, and is around 55% the size of the original console.

The best news of all is that the ports are being handled by M2, the developers who have been working on the excellent Sega Ages series. Some of the games include regional variations, as well, and the mini console's menu theme is composed by the legendary Yuzo Koshiro (Streets of Rage, Actraiser).

All in all, it sounds like a solid effort from Sega. We'll have to wait and see the other games in the lineup, but the Genesis Mini looks promising.
