One Piece Film: Red Rolls Past Evangelion 3.0+1.0 to Become 10th Highest-Grossing Anime Film in Japan
One Piece Film: Red is currently charting its course through the Japanese box office, climbing higher and higher waves each week and breaking record after record, like Luffy earning its place in the history books. Today, the Japanese press reported that the Toei Animation-produced film has surpassed 11 billion yen, making it the 10th highest-grossing anime film in Japan of all time pushing 2021’s Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time out of the top 10.
As of August 28, One Piece Film: Red’s 23rd day in theaters, the film has reached 11.454 billion yen (US$83.32 million) made on the back of 8.2 million tickets sold. This makes One Piece Film: Red the 10th highest-grossing anime film in Japan and the 29th film overall in the country, just behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens at 27th place. Film: Red is also the second fastest film to reach 11 billion yen, just after Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train.
In the 2022 box office ranking, which Japanese box offices track as December 2021 to November 2022, One Piece Film: Red Film is still third behind Top Gun Maverick in second place with an impressive 11.81 billion yen and JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 at 13.75 billion yen. There’s no doubt now that One Piece Film: Red will surpass these numbers and reach the 15 billion yen milestone.

One Piece Film: Red opened in Japanese theaters on August 6. Crunchyroll, who'll be releasing the film internationally across the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand sometime this fall, describes the seafaring musical adventure as such:
Uta —the most beloved singer in the world. Renowned for concealing her own identity when performing, her voice has come to be described as “otherworldly.” Now, for the first time ever, Uta will reveal herself to the world at a live concert. As the venue fills with all kinds of Uta fans—excited pirates, the Navy watching closely, and the Straw Hats led by Luffy who simply came to enjoy her sonorous performance—the voice that the whole world has been waiting for is about to resound. The story begins with the shocking fact that she is Shanks' daughter.
The One Piece TV anime is also still going strong, with over 1,000 episodes of the series streaming right here on Crunchyroll, with new episodes coming out as they air in Japan.
