Sho Hirano, a 25-year-old member of Johnny & Associates' male idol group King & Prince, is confirmed to star in the forthcoming new live-action TV drama adaptation of Takeshi Natsuhara (story) and Kuromaru's (art) suspense manga Kurosagi (The Black Swindler) in October 2022.
The manga was first serialized in Shogakukan's Weekly Young Sunday from November 2003 to July 2008. After the magazine ceased publication, it moved to the publisher's Big Comic Spirits as Shin Kurosagi (New Kurosagi) and ended serialization in July 2013. Then, Shin Kurosagi Kanketsu-hen (New Kurosagi: Final Chapter) ran in the magazine from August 2012 to July 2013. The series has 42 tankobon vilumes in total and has printed more than eight million copies. It won the 2008 Shogakukan Manga Award for seinen/general manga category.
Its story centers on Koshiro Kurosaki, who has lost his family due to fraud. He becomes "Kurosagi," a swindler who deceives only swindlers, and seeks out and overthrows his real "enemy". This is the second time that the manga has gotten its live-action adaptation. In the first TV drama in 2006 and film in 2008, the protagonist Kurosaki was played by Tomohisa Yamashita, a former member of Johnny & Associates' male idol group NEWS.
The forthcoming second TV drama's story is set in 2022, and will depict a direct confrontation between the protagonist Kurosaki and his real enemy who stole his family from him, which was not told in the previous drama series because the manga had not reached its climax at the time. Hirano says, "When I received the offer, I was happy and surprised at the same time. I think the image people have of me is that of the one who is deceived (laughs), so I am very honored to play the role of a 'swindler who deceives swindlers.'. In this drama, I really want to deceive you as Kurosagi!"
