The full lineup of games players will be competing in at this year's EVO 2022 fighting game tournament will be announced during a live stream on March 8, but we already know one that won't be appearing. The Sony-owned organization released a statement on Twitter to note that tournament staple Super Smash Bros. won't be returning for this one.
According to the statement, this was a decision on Nintendo's behalf. EVO says they're "saddened that Nintendo has chosen not to continue that legacy with us this year," and they hope to see it back in action in the future.

As for where Smash competitions will go next, Nintendo has its own event up its sleeve. While there aren't any real details yet, Nintendo previously announced plans to partner with Panda Global to host a Super Smash Bros. competitive circuit of its own.
EVO 2022 will return to in-person competition when it kicks off August 5-7 in Las Vegas, Nevada. You'll be able to catch the announcement show on March 8 at 5:00pm PT on the EVO Twitch channel.
