Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train Is 1st Anime Film Since Ponyo to Rank 1st in DVD Sales Over One Year

 

Even over a year out from its theatrical debut Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train is still ranking first on charts in Japan, this time for its home video release, where it took the top spot in both the DVD and Blu-ray categories for the anime film's regular edition, as well as third place for the Blu-ray ranking and fourth place in the DVD ranking for the limited edition version of the film (which are counted separately).

 

In Oricon's report, they revealed that Mugen Train's regular edition had sold 633,000 copies on DVD and 459,000 copies on Blu-ray, taking the first spot for both categories. This is the first time since 2009's Ponyo, directed by Hayao Miyazaki, that an anime film has ranked first on the DVD chart, and the first time an anime film has sold over 500,000 copies on DVD since Ponyo. Mugen Train's Blu-ray sales come in second on the all-time chart for an animated film during a single year behind Disney's Frozen in 2014.

 

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train's limited edition also ranked fourth on the DVD chart with 183,000 copies sold, and third on the Blu-ray chart with 368,000 copies sold. These totals may not include some online retailers, like the ufotable WEBSHOP, which saw the site break under the heavy load of people trying to get pre-orders for the discs when they were released.

 

This brings the confirmed Oricon sales total of the Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train anime film to 1,714,000 copies sold over both DVD and Blu-ray and the two regular and limited editions as of December 20, 2021, in Japan.

 

 

Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train opened in Japanese cinemas on October 16, 2020, and had the best opening weekend in Japanese cinema history, becoming the highest-grossing film in Japanese theaters ever, the highest-grossing anime and Japanese film worldwide, and the highest-grossing film of 2020. You can read our review of the film here. In North America, Mugen Train made its stop in theaters on April 23 both dubbed and subbed formats, with a digital and streaming release of the film coming on June 22, becoming the first anime film to top the US box office since Pokémon: The First Movie in 1999.

 

The Ufotable-produced anime film continued to adapt the manga series by Koyoharu Gotouge, which saw the first TV anime series adaptation in 2019, continuing on with the Mugen Train Arc in October 2021 and then the Entertainment District Arc in December 2021, which is currently airing on Japanese TV and streaming right here on Crunchyroll.
