Tatami Time Machine Blues originally premiered on Disney+ on September 14 in select overseas territories and also features an exclusive sixth episode that began streaming on the service starting October 12. That episode is not part of the theatrical compilation version of the anime that is also currently being screened in Japanese theaters and began theatrical screenings on September 30. The series is described by Disney+ below:
It is August 12th. After the remote control to his boarding house's only air conditioning unit is inadvertently destroyed by spilled cola, "I" devises a plan to return to yesterday in a time machine to recover the remote before it breaks. However, his prankster friend Ozu cannot resist playing with past events, even if it means bringing the universe to the brink of destruction. Now "I" finds himself racing through time to avoid disaster.
Sonny Boy director Shingo Natsume is directing Tatami Time Machine Blues at Science SARU, taking over from Masaaki Yuasa who directed The Tatami Galaxy and spin-off anime film The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl.
