Nearly a year after the PlayStation 5 was released, we finally have a good rundown on how the console has fair its first year on sale with Sony yesterday releasing its second-quarter financial report for the year ending March 2022. The unpredicted demand for the PlayStation 5 during COVID-19 times, along with a worldwide chip shortage and challenges distributing the console has made for some of the highest demands gaming has ever seen, with consoles unable to stay on store shelves.
Sony confirmed that as of the end of September 2021, 13.4 million PlayStation 5's had been shipped worldwide. This is just 100,000 units shy of the PlayStation 4 shipment number for its entire first year, with the PS5 tracking to have shipped more by the end of its first year than its predecessor. Sony is holding firm that the now current-gen console will sell 14.8 million units this fiscal year.
Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki explained that the chip shortage and distribution disruptions have hindered getting the consoles into players' hands, but are teaming up with chipmaker TSMC to help alleviate the situation but opening up an advanced chip-making manufacturing plant in Japan – though it won't open until 2024.
The Japanese government is offering the project financial aid to help improve the security of Japan's economy. Sony already assembles some of its PlayStation consoles in Japan with parts sourced from all over the world, with its chips being made in a Sony-run factory in Japan, not only will it let Sony keep a close eye on the production, but prevent any issues that might arise with international distribution.
Totoki exclaimed that they will try and ship as many consoles as possible as soon as possible.
