While Pokémon Day may be coming to a close in the west, early on February 28, the next Pokémon anime film – the first traditionally animated film in the series in two years – released a full 1 minute and 30-second trailer, and a 30-second promo teasing the plot and showing the first animated footage of newly announced Mythical Pokémon Zarude.

The new film has Ash (in the new film canon which started with I Choose You!) meeting a new boy Coco in the forest. Ash learns that Coco thinks he is a Pokémon and is being raised by a special mythical Pokémon in a very Tarzan-esque way, calling Zarude his father. A crisis appears in the forest and Ash has to team up with Coco to save it.

Tetsuo Yajima, who directed Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us, as well as the Mega Evolution specials during the Pokémon: XY TV anime series, will be returning to direct Coco at OLM inside Team Kato. He’ll be working alongside long-time Pokémon writer Atsuhiro Tomioka to create the script for the film. The cast from the last Pokémon anime films and series return. Coco’s voice actor hasn’t been announced yet.

 

Hirotaka Marufuji, who worked on the character designs for the film, posted a celebratory drawing on his Twitter account to celebrate the release of the trailer.

 

 

Pokémon the Movie: Coco is the 23rd Pokémon anime film, and will be released in Japanese theaters from July 10.
