2019 was an interesting year for video games, with Hideo Kojima’s first game after Konami being released, Kingdom Hearts III finally being released after nearly 15 years, Shenmue III being released after 19 years, and the latest Pokémon game causing controversy with the first major change to the series’ core ethos in the franchise’s history. To tie up the year, Weekly Famitsu, a video game magazine in Japan, surveyed 132 top Japanese game developers and celebrities on which game they enjoyed playing most in 2019.
While the list is mostly about games that came out over the last year, it also includes games from previous years that they were still playing regularly. Here are the Top 5 games, with the rest of the list following.
1. Death Stranding
2. Dragon Quest Walk
3. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
4. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
5. Ring Fit Adventures
It’s no surprise that two of the games in the Top 5 are based around exercise with Tokyo 2020 approaching next year and the Rugby World Cup in Tokyo last September that developers are also trying to be more healthy. Dragon Quest Walk is a Pokémon Go type game, with more RPG elements on top, that is exclusive to Japan where you have to go outside to play, regularly featured on Twitter’s Top Trends in the country.
Here are the other 25 games rounding out the Top 30:
6. Pokémon Sword and Shield
7. Days Gone
8. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne
9. Dragon Quest Builders 2
10. Apex Legends
11. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
12. Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown
13. 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim
14. Judgment
15. Persona 5 Royal
16. Resident Evil 2
17. Kingdom Hearts III
18. Astral Chain
19. Borderlands 3
20. Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order
21. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
22. Tetris 99
23. Archer Densetsu
24. Fate/Grand Order
25. Splatoon 2
26. Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers
27. Samurai Shodown
28. Detroit: Become Human
29. moon
30. GRIS
Seeing Splatoon 2 in the list, considering the game was released back in June 2017, just further cements the game as Japan’s favorite “online shooter.” Having the top games from the last year like Pokémon, Kingdom Hearts III, and Persona 5 Royal on the list was a given considering how widely loved they are in and out of game dev circles.
