Male Idol Group Arashi to Perform at Emperor Naruhito’s Enthronement Festival

Emperor and Empress

On April 30, 2019, for the first time since 1817, the Japanese Emperor, Emperor Akihito abdicated and brought the end of Heisei Era. On the next day, May 1, his son, Naruhito ascended to the Chrysanthemum Throne, became Emperor Naruhito, and the Reiwa Era started with celebrations all over Japan.

The enthronement ceremony has three parts; the first of which has already occurred with Emperor Haruhito taking possession of the Three Sacred Treasures of Japan. The second part is the enthronement, dated to start on October 22. Surrounding the enthronement will be a large festival starting on November 9 featuring the biggest Male idol group from the Heisei era, Arashi.

Arashi – who announced a hiatus starting on January 31, 2020 – will be performing a song written especially for the festival from Japanese playwright, Yoshikazu Okada. Sho Sakurai, a member of Arashi, expressed the desire from the group “to give our best performance wholeheartedly so we can add to the celebratory mood at the gathering,” The Japan Times reported.

Also slated to appear at the festival is 15 year old Mana Ashida (young Mako Mori in Pacific Rim, Margo in Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us). Ashida will be giving a speech to the emperor and the empress if they choose to attend the November celebrations at the Imperial Palace Plaza in Chiyoda, Tokyo.

The public can apply for tickets online for the festival until October 2, with 60,000 people expected to attend the celebrations.
