Pui Pui Molcar was created by Tomoki Misato, who directed, wrote and storyboarded the first season at studios Japan Green Hearts and Shin-Ei Animation. The non-verbal stop-motion series aired as part of children's variety program Kinder TV on TV Tokyo, but quickly found a global audience across all ages and was the most popular anime of the Winter 2021 anime season, according to Japanese popular review site Filmarks.

Hana Ono, who worked as a storyboarder on the first season, took over as director for the new series under Misato's supervision.
