Japan Box Office: Sumikko Gurashi 2nd Film Falls to 3rd Place in Its 4th Weekend

Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Aoi Tsukiyo no Mahou no Ko (Sumikko Gurashi The Movie: A Magical Child of the Blue Moonlit Night), which had dominated the No.1 spot for two weeks in a row since the second weekend of November, finally fell to third place in its fourth weekend.

The 65-minute second anime feature film inspired by Japanese stationery company San-X's popular mascot character brand has earned 850 million yen (7.47 million USD) from its domestic run. Since 72 more theaters will be added after December 3 and 16 more by the end of December as reported, further growth in box office performance is expected in the coming weeks.

The live-action feature film adaptation of Fumi Yoshinaga (Antique Bakery, Ooku: The Inner Chambers)'s Kinou Nani Tabeta? / What Did You Eat Yesterday? manga dropped one place to sixth in its fourth weekend. The 120-minute film has grossed 1.1 billion yen (9.64 million USD) in four weeks and has become the fifth Japanese live-action film based on a manga to break the 1 billion yen mark this year.

Mogura no Uta FINAL, the third and final live-action film adaptation of Noboru Takahashi's crime action manga series, hugely dropped four places to seventh in its second weekend. The film has earned a disappointing 250 million yen (2.19 million USD) and is expected to become the lowest-grossing entry in the live-action film series.

Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night dropped three positions to ninth in its fifth weekend. The film has earned 1.21 billion yen (10.6 million USD) so far, which is 60 percent of the box office gross that the 2017 film Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale made in the same five weeks.

EUREKA / Eureka Seven Hi-Evolution, the third part of the Eureka Seven Hi-Evolution trilogy film project, was released in 142 theaters across Japan on November 26. While both of the project's first two films - Eureka Seven Hi-Evolution I (September 16, 2017 release) and ANEMONE: Eureka Seven Hi-Evolution (November 10, 2018 release) - made their top 10 debut, EUREKA failed to rank in the top 10 in its debut weekend.
