Classic Pokémon Trading Card Game cards continue to fetch hefty sums depending on which ones you have in your collection. Considering some of the rarities to be found in the first edition, it's no surprise to see that going doubly so in the case of sealed booster boxes. One such box recently sold via Heritage Auctions, and it managed to fetch a record-breaking $408,000 in the process.
The box in question was a Pokémon First Edition Base Set Sealed Booster Box from 1999, complete with its original shrink wrap and everything. The impressive sale managed to beat the record for a similar booster box that was sold in November 2020, where it went for $360,000. Naturally, one of the hot commodities in these boxes is the first edition holographic Charizard card, which can fetch some serious coin on its own.
Each of these sealed boxes contains 36 booster packs with 11 cards in each, for a total of 396 mint condition cards.
All told, 16 Pokémon lots were auctioned over the weekend, adding up to over $1.3 million in sales. Two other Pokémon auctions netted six figures, as well, including a Blastoise hologram card from 1998 at $360,000.
Now is as good a time as any to double check and make sure you aren't setting on a Pokémon TCG gold mine of your own!
