One Piece Film Red Passes Ponyo to Be 6th Highest-Grossing Anime Film in Japan

One Piece Film Red

Even eight weeks on, One Piece Film Red continues to reign at the top of the Japanese box office. As previously reported, the Toei Animation-produced film stayed at number one this week with nearly 15.7 billion yen made at the Japanese box office overall. This has let the film pass Ponyo on the all-time charts.

As of September 26, One Piece Film Red has reportedly made nearly 15.7 billion yen (US$113.41 million) on the back of 11.26 million tickets sold, with actuals coming in at 15.696 billion yen. Even so, this means Film Red has moved up to 6th place on the all-time highest-grossing anime film charts and 11th place on the all-time film charts in Japan, taking over the anime slot from Hayao Miyazaki’s Ponyo and James Cameron’s Avatar.

Though it should be noted that Avatar was re-released in Japan over the weekend but its re-release gross hasn’t yet been included with its original release box office gross despite it making over 100 million yen (and would thus continue to be at 11th place). Due to its limited two-week release, its final box office numbers won’t likely have an effect on One Piece Film Red’s numbers going forward.

Going forward as One Piece continues to sail on, it’ll have an uphill climb to reach the next milestones, including breaking into the all-time top 10 charts. The 10th film on the list is Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets with 17.30 billion yen, a large hurdle to jump for the film in its eighth week, though not impossible. What may be impossible is topping Howl's Moving Castle’s 19.60 billion yen, which is the next film on the all-time anime charts at 5th place.

One Piece Film: Red opened in Japanese theaters on August 6. Crunchyroll will be releasing the film in English-speaking countries this November, starting with Australia and New Zealand on November 3 and then the United States and Canada on November 4. Crunchyroll describes the seafaring musical adventure as such:

Uta—the most beloved singer in the world whose voice has been described as "otherworldly"—is renowned for concealing her own identity when performing. Now, for the first time ever, she will reveal herself to the world at a live concert.

With the Navy watching closely, the venue fills with Uta's fans—including excited pirates and the Straw Hats led by Luffy, who simply came to enjoy her sonorous performance—all eagerly awaiting the voice that the whole world has been waiting for to resound. The story begins with the shocking revelation that she is the enigmatic Shanks' daughter.

The One Piece TV anime is also still going strong, with over 1,000 episodes of the series streaming right here on Crunchyroll and new episodes coming out each week as they air in Japan.
