Upon the announcement, Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki had some very kind words to say about Caird. "John is a wonderful guy, both Miyazaki and I really like him. He was so happy when I gave him a No-Face piggy bank. I really look forward to seeing how Chihiro develops on the stage."
John Caird also commented, saying that he has "long considered Hayao Miyazaki to be an outstanding genius in the world of film and one of the greatest living visionaries in the field of animation." Continuing on, Caird explains that he "looks forward to deepening the partnership with our beloved friends at Toho through this new relationship with Studio Ghibli and its gracious and brilliant chief producer, Toshio Suzuki."
It was also revealed that two of Japan's biggest female stars will be sharing the role of Chihiro. Kamishiraishi previously worked with Caird on Knights' Tale, with this being Hashimoto's stage debut.
The Spirited Away stage play adaptation will be opening in Tokyo in February/March 2022, then moving to Osaka in April 2022, Fukuoka in May 2022, Sapporo in June 2022, and finally settling in Nagoya in June/July 2022.
