Fourteen Senate Republicans joined every Democrat Wednesday in voting for a resolution opposing continued support of Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen. Since Republicans had previously voted down such a resolution, what changed? Answer: The Trump administration’s evasions and excuses on Saudi Arabia’s murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi angered some Republicans. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis briefed senators on Yemen and Khashoggi, but CIA Director Gina Haspel was not present, a decision that came from the White House. "I changed my mind because I'm pissed," said Sen. Lindsey Graham in his new macho rage-man persona. "The way the administration has handled it is not acceptable." Graham also threatened to withhold support from spending bills if the CIA doesn’t conduct a briefing: “Anything that you need me for to get out of town, I ain't doing it until we hear from the CIA.” While Graham will fold and everyone knows it, it’s still remarkable to hear from someone who’s been one of Donald Trump’s staunchest defenders in the Senate.
