Deadspin Is Being Burnt To The Ground By Its New Management As Staff Quits Or Revolts

Source: www.techdirt.com - Thursday, October 31, 2019 If you're a sports fan and you're not familiar with Deadspin.com , then, no, you're not a sports fan. The former Gawker property is certainly one of the most popular sports sites on the web and was a bright spot even when under Gawker Media's management. The charm of Deadspin has always been its irreverence, its humor, and its willingness to take on stories that fall outside of the realm of sports reporting. The fanbase of the site was built upon this editorial practice. Gawker fell to Hulk Hogan and Peter Thiel, of course, leading the site to be sold to Univision. During that time, Deadspin continued to operate normally. The site, along with other Gizmodo Media properties, was then sold to Great Hill Partners, a private equity firm. Great Hill put in place Paul Maidment as Editorial Director. Alongside Great Hill attempting to clamp down on the Deadspin staff's use of encrypted communications, leading to a fair

Source: www.abqjournal.com - Thursday, October 31, 2019 FORT WORTH, Texas — A judge has issued a gag order in the murder trial of a white Fort Worth police officer who shot a black woman in her home. The order prohibits lawyers and others involved in Aaron Dean’s trial from speaking publicly about specifics of the case. Bodycam footage shows Dean shot 28-year-old Atatiana Jefferson through a back window of her home in the early morning. Dean cannot be heard identifying himself as police. He was responding to a call about an open front door. Dean, now 35, resigned and was charged with murder soon after the Oct. 12 shooting. Jefferson’s death drew national attention. Judge David Hagerman wrote that the gag order is “necessary in order to prevent imminent and irreparable harm to the judicial process.” All Related Source: Breaking News

Officials: Arkansas hunter did not die solely from deer attacking him

Source: wreg.com - Thursday, October 31, 2019 LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas authorities say a hunter who died after a deer he’d shot attacked him had pre-existing medical conditions that contributed to his death. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission on Thursday said a preliminary report from the Baxter County coroner shows that 66-year-old Thomas Alexander’s death was not caused solely by the deer attack . The agency did not say what medical conditions Anderson had. Alexander shot a buck with a muzzleloader while hunting Oct. 22 near Yellville, an area in the Ozark Mountains about 105 miles north of Little Rock. A commission spokesman last week said the deer attacked Alexander when the hunter approached the animal to see if it was dead. Alexander had multiple puncture wounds. He died at a hospital. Trick-or-treating events moved inside due to cold weather

Source: wreg.com - Thursday, October 31, 2019 MEMPHIS, Tenn. — It was a cold day in Memphis, but that didn’t stop trick-or-treaters from filling their bowls with candy. Their parents simply had to improvise and find some indoor events. One of those events was “Creep Sweep” at the Crosstown Concourse. There was live music and plenty of spots for kids to snag some goodies in a warm environment. “They can wear their costumes, and they’re not covered in coats, and they’re comfortable. So this is great. We’re excited,” one parent said. Memphis Police moved parts of their normally outdoor trick-or-treating events inside, too. Officers in the Raleigh area had a bounce house and all kinds of games for kids to play at a community center there. “It’s good they brought it in because we thought it was over with. We thought Halloween was over with,” a parent said. But the event went on just the same as parents brought their dressed up little ones to a safe spot to have some fun on Halloween. “We d

Facebook Under Pressure to Follow Twitter Lead on Political Ads

Source: www.truthdig.com - Thursday, October 31, 2019 SAN FRANCISCO—Twitter’s ban on political advertising is ratcheting up pressure on Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg to follow suit. But so far, that doesn’t appear likely to happen. Facebook’s policy is to accept paid political ads from candidates without fact-checking them or censoring them, even if they contain lies. And Zuckerberg doubled down on that stand Wednesday following Twitter’s announcement, reiterating that “political speech is important” and that Facebook is loath to interfere with it. Twitter's decision to ban all political ads is a PR win, but it will have almost no effect on the company's advertising business

Source: www.businessinsider.com - Wednesday, October 30, 2019 Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey announced in a tweet thread today that his company would stop running paid political ads. The decision contrasted sharply with Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg positioning, but the real-world impact on Twitter's ad business will be negligible. EMarketer estimates that Twitter will bring in $1.57 billion in ad revenue in 2019, total political ad spend for the 2018 midterms was less than $3 million, according to CFO Ned Segal. Experts also told Business Insider that the platform is more valuable for gaining influence among media elites and those with organic reach, calling Dorsey's decision a shrewd PR play. Still, the move prompted President Trump's campaign to state incorrectly that the company had thrown away "hundreds of millions" in potential ad revenue. Click here for more BI Prime stories . The judge, Richard Leon of the US District Court in Washington, has not yet responded. Thursday has been shaping up to be one of the most consequential days in court so far for the House impeachment inquiry and the White House’s attempts to stonewall. Two hearings are scheduled that will test the White House’s claim that its staffers are immune from testifying. Leon had scheduled the hearing after Kupperman, a former deputy national security adviser, asked the court whether he needed to testify. Boeing CEO to Congress: ‘We understand and deserve this scrutiny’

Source: wgntv.com - Tuesday, October 29, 2019 Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg admitted to Congress on Tuesday that his company made mistakes with the design of its 737 MAX jet and deserves the scrutiny it is receiving after two fatal crashes. “In the months since the accidents, there has been much criticism of Boeing and its culture. We understand and deserve this scrutiny,” he told the Senate Commerce Committee . The appearance comes on the first anniversary of the first crash. Seated behind him at the hearing were family members of victims from the crashes, which killed a combined 346 people — a Lion Air plane last October and an Ethiopian Airlines jet in March. Muilenburg apologized to the family members, and told them, “We made mistakes and we got some things wrong.” Investigators and the company have linked the crashes to a flawed stabilization system that repeatedly pushed the planes’ noses down and overwhelmed the pilots. ‘I would walk before I would get on a 737 MAX’ Senators pre

All the Jets did at the trade deadline was piss off their best player

Source: www.sbnation.com - Tuesday, October 29, 2019 Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports If Jamal Adams wasn’t for sale, then the Jets should’ve hung up the phone. A fire sale would’ve made perfect sense for the New York Jets . The team is 1-6 and new general manager Joe Douglas is in charge of fixing that. Douglas was hired by the Jets in June, so he wasn’t the one who signed running back Le’Veon Bell to a four-year, $52.5 million deal or linebacker C.J. Mosley to a five-year, $85 million deal. He didn’t make any of the team’s draft picks either. It would’ve been perfectly logical for him to get rid of some of the priciest contracts on the roster in exchange for more draft picks and cap space. The team isn’t making the playoffs anyway. That sure looked like the plan when defensive lineman Leonard Williams was traded to the Giants one day before the trade deadline in exchange for third- and fifth-round picks. NCAA will allow college athletes to earn money off their likeness

Source: www.engadget.com - Tuesday, October 29, 2019 In a departure from a long-standing position, the NCAA has voted to allow student athletes to "benefit" from the use of their likeness. The organization's Board of Governors made the announcement on Tuesday , and said they've instructed all three of the NCAA's divisions to start looking at their relevant bylaws. While the NCAA says it made the decision following months of "comprehensive" input, the fact California Governor Gavin Newsom signed the state's Fair Play bill into law at end of September likely influenced the policy change more than anything else. (credit: xsix / Flickr ) Sony today announced that it will soon shut down PlayStation Vue, its streaming TV service that served as a lighter alternative to traditional cable for live-TV viewers. The company's short blog post on the subject says that Vue will continue to operate until January 30, 2020, but that it will become inoperable after that date. "Unfortunately, the highly competitive Pay TV industry, with expensive content and network deals, has been slower to change than we expected," Sony wrote. "Because of this, we have decided to remain focused on our core gaming business." Sony will continue to offer movies and TV episodes for purchase on-demand through the PlayStation Store, however; this closure only affects the live-TV service, which licensed channels traditionally found on cable for streaming
