Trump's DHS refuses to answer basic questions about its 'new' effort to fight domestic terrorism

If you're wondering what the Trump administration is doing to prevent domestic terrorism of the sort we have seen yet again, this time in Poway , California, the answer is: We don't know. We don't know because it is remaining curiously silent about it. Acting Department of Homeland Security head Kevin McAleenan announced the formation of a new "Office of Targeted Violence and Terrorism Protection" two weeks back, and part-time press secretary Sarah Sanders has been full of her usual bluster about how deeply the White House theoretically Gives A Damn, but NBC News reports that when it started asking basic questions about it, the administration quickly clammed up . It reported, “DHS declined to specify how many staff members or how much money the new office will have.” The two obvious possibilities are (1) administration officials don't know, or (2) they do know, but it's such a small and token effort that they don't want to say it out loud. And that is not just us saying that, but also deeply skeptical ex-DHS officials. As NBC reports, "’We do not know yet whether there will be any additional staff or resources committed to this broader mission,’ [former DHS official Brette Steele] said. ‘Staff and resources are drastically reduced, they have gone from 16 to seven [full-time employees], from $9 million to $0 in contracts.’" Efforts to combat right-wing domestic terrorism have been stymied for the last decade by Republican apoplexy
