Japan Box Office: THE FIRST SLAM DUNK Stays on No.1 for Seven Consecutive Weekends

 

 

The basketball anime's reign still continues. THE FIRST SLAM DUNK earned 428 million yen (3.33 million USD) on 284,000 admissions, holding its No.1 position for seven straight weekends since its release on December 4. In 44 days since its release in Japan, the cumulative total domestic gross of the 124-minute film has reached 8.275 billion yen (64.3 million USD) on 5.67 million admissions, making it the 24th top-grossing Japanese film of all-time, surpassing Shin Godzilla (2016 / 8.25 billion yen).

Behind THE FIRST SLAM DUNK, the film has stayed on second place for seven weekends was Suzume. Makoto Shinkai's latest feature made a still-strong 259 million yen (2.01 million USD) on 193,000 admissions in its three-day tenth weekend, bringing its total to 12.488 billion yen (97 million USD) on 9.398 million admissions. At the current momentum, it could reach Shinkai's previous film, Weathering With You (2019 / 14.19 billion yen), by the end of next month.

In its second weekend, Meitantei Conan: Haibara Ai Monogatari ~Kurogane no Mystery Train~ (Detective Conan: Ai Haibara Story ~Black Iron Mystery Train~), a new compilation film focuses on the past of Ai Haibara, ranked fifth, one position down from its debut weekend. The film was produced as a prologue to the forthcoming 26th feature film Detective Conan: Kurogane no Submarine to be released on April 14.

 

The anime film adaptation of Mizuki Tsujimura's fantasy novel Kagami no Kojou (English edition title: Lonely Castle in the Mirror) ranked eighth in its fourth weekend, with a cumulative total box office gross of 610 million yen (4.73 million USD).

 

Surprisingly, One Piece Film Red returned to top 10 in its 24th weekend, ranking ninth. The film, which has earned an impressive 19.12 billion yen (148.3 million USD) in Japan, will end its domestic theatrical run on January 29.
